I was shocked by what I saw in the seas, and by what I didn’t see.

I saw no sharks, no whales, no dolphins. I saw no fish longer than 11 inches. The larger ones had all been fished out.

When I swam in the Aegean, the sea floor was covered with litter; I saw tires and plastic bags, bottles, cans, shoes and clothing.

Hi, my name is Jan, I’m from Ghent, Belgium -hence the name “jan van gent”.
I haven’t followed any photography course or study -yet. I’m not a professional photographer. But I do have a passion for beauty, beautiful landscapes, beautiful compositions, beautiful light, beautiful people. I once started photography to save and share those moments of beauty, and I seem to have the talent to capture things in quite an interesting way.
I don’t always know how it happens, but i do know i have to follow my guts when making a shot. Pretty often I only take one shot of a scene, which makes that my photos might not be technically perfect: the ISO could’ve been lower, or i could’ve used the lens’ sweet spot a little better. To be honest, I don’t really care about those technicalities, though I do know how to use them in my favor.
Maybe thats why I love analog photography as well, where you have to hope for a good result. When you press the shutter, the scene is captured, and the result is hidden in the box for the next few weeks.
Recently I bought a second hand Canon EOS 5D, because I once read that this camera should be the closest to analog -which i can agree now. I pretty often use an old manual Yashica ML 50mm 2.0, because it captures colours in a different way and because of it’s little flaws in the corner -slightly unsharp and some vignette.
